Gianfranco Cavaglià

Gianfranco Cavaglià, architect, professor of Technology of Architecture at Politecnico di Torino, has always combined research with professional practice. He worked with Achille Castiglioni from 1972 to 2002. The C-1918 handle series (the name indicates the date of birth of Castiglioni) was one of the last projects by Achille Castiglioni with Gianfranco Cavaglià, part of a long collaboration that led to projects of urban planning, architecture and interior design – for stores and offices – as well as works of display design for exhibitions and museums. Castiglioni and Cavaglià carefully developed, designed and produced objects, equipment and lighting fixtures, in constant pursuit of solutions that were lacking in the world. In the case of the C-1918 project, the stimulus came from the overly anonymous character of the handles that were on the market at the end of the Seventies. Their joint observation of the grips, sections and materials of handles led to the design theme of the C-1918, now produced by dnd by Martinelli thanks to Giovanna and Piergiorgio Castiglioni and drawings from the archives of Fondazione Castiglioni.
